About the TEF data dashboard

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) data contains student experience and outcome measures for individual providers.

This data is intended to support the 2026 consultation on quality, and is in the format we are consulting on. It is intended to support future integrated quality assessments, however its use and future development depends on the results of the consultation.

The student outcomes data for continuation, completion and progression in the form currently used for regulation is available to download separately: Get the student outcomes data.

The 2023 TEF used data published in September 2022, available from the data archive.

We update the TEF data annually, to support providers to make improvements to students' experience and outcomes.

What does the data show?

The data includes the following student outcomes (study outcome and post-study outcome) and experience measures:

1. Continuation: The proportion of students who were observed to be continuing in the study of a higher education qualification (or have gained a qualification) one year and 15 days after they started their course (two years and 15 days for part-time students)
2. Completion: The proportion of students who were observed to have gained a higher education qualification (or were continuing in the study of a qualification) four years and 15 days after they started their course (six years and 15 days for part-time students).
3. Progression: The proportion of qualifiers who identify managerial or professional employment, further study or other positive outcomes among the activities that they were undertaking when responding to the Graduate Outcomes survey 15 months after they left higher education.
4. Use of skills: The proportion of qualifiers who reported that they were utilising what they learnt during their studies in their current activity, study, or work when responding to the Graduate Outcomes survey 15 months after gaining their qualification.
5. Earnings: The proportion of qualifiers who, three years after gaining their qualification, were either studying for a higher education qualification or had earnings above a specified earnings threshold.
6. Student experience measures: The level of agreement indicated among final year students to the range of statements that comprise an area, or scale, of the National Student Survey asking about different aspects of their higher education experience.

How is the data constructed?

The TEF data dashboard and associated data files are based on a common set of student outcome (study outcome and post-study outcome) and experience data indicators we construct and publish for use in our regulation.

These are produced in the same way for each provider we regulate, using available national datasets and consistent definitions and approaches to data. The data definitions and approaches used follow from our 2022 consultation on the construction of student outcome and experience data indicators for use in our regulation, and have been further developed to support the 2026 consultation on reforms to our approach to quality regulation.

The data covers all registered providers in England, whether they are required to (or choose to) participate in the TEF or not.

The data includes four years of student experience indicators from the National Student Survey (NSS). The indicators cover the full set of NSS themes, but that does not imply that all these measures will be used in the next TEF exercise.
