Student outcomes data

The student outcomes data supports our regulation of student outcomes.

It contains information on student outcome measures (continuation, completion and progression) and is reported across a range of indicators and split indicators.

  1. Continuation: The proportion of students that were observed to be continuing in the study of a higher education qualification (or have gained a qualification) one year and 15 days after they started their course (two years and 15 days for part-time students)
  2. Completion: The proportion of students that were observed to have gained a higher education qualification (or were continuing in the study of a qualification) four years and 15 days after they started their course (six years and 15 days for part-time students).
  3. Progression: The proportion of qualifiers that identify managerial or professional employment, further study or other positive outcomes among the activities that they were undertaking when responding to the Graduate Outcomes survey 15 months after they left higher education.

About the data

We publish the student outcomes data as official statistics.

The student outcomes measures provide one part of the evidence used in our regulatory processes: our approach means any judgements that we make about a provider’s performance will also take into account provider context. Refer to Regulatory advice 20 for guidance on the approach we take to regulating student outcomes under condition of registration B3.

The student outcomes datafiles are based on a common set of student outcome and experience data indicators we construct and publish for use in our regulation. These are produced in the same way for each provider we regulate, using available national datasets and consistent definitions and approaches to data. The data definitions and approaches used follow from our 2022 consultation on the construction of student outcome and experience data indicators for use in our regulation.

Details of the data sources, definitions and methods that the OfS uses to construct student outcome and experience indicators can be found in documents describing our measures and definitions.

Data protection

For data protection purposes, we have applied a comprehensive set of rounding and suppression criteria.

Anyone wishing to use the data must follow the guidelines for appropriate use.

Archived data

We have retained previously published datafiles.

The archived datafiles reflect the OfS's position prior to any investigations opened for the 2022-23 assessment cycle and do not reflect any judgements made by the OfS. As a result, a provider with data below a numerical threshold does not necessarily mean that positive student outcomes are not being delivered. In addition, providers in these datafiles may have submitted data amendments that were subsequently accepted but are not reflected in this data.

Please refer to the data downloads above for our most up-to-date information on student outcomes.

There are additional risks to data quality in some areas of the 2022-23 returns, but in general we consider the data is fit for purpose and facilitates robust measures of student outcomes and experiences.

Note: The workbooks showing the taught population for each provider were updated in April 2024 to remove the apprenticeships completion page due to an error.

This error did not impact any other pages, or the data in the Tableau or csv files. Please use the csv file or contact us on [email protected] if you need access to the data from the apprenticeship completion taught table.

We removed the total for all OfS registered providers from the ‘taught’ and ‘partnership’ views. These previously showed the same figures as the ‘taught or registered’ data for all OfS registered providers. We also resolved an issue that caused the excel workbooks to be empty for a small number of providers.
