Degree awarding powers

Variation

If a provider has held full degree awarding powers for three years or more, it will normally be eligible to be considered for DAPs authorisation with no time limit. We refer to this as 'indefinite DAPs'.

A provider may also wish to apply to change the level or subject for which it can award degrees. Providers holding either full or indefinite DAPs authorisations can normally only make these requests.

If a provider wishes to vary its DAPs authorisation, it should submit a request in writing to the OfS. Where a provider has time-limited DAPs that are due to expire, the OfS may contact it to discuss the assessment process.

The assessment for the variation of DAPs will not normally require the same level of scrutiny as when the provider first applied for DAPs.

Instead, it aims to confirm that the provider has exercised its current powers securely and will do the same for any new powers that it is seeking.

There are some instances where we may vary or revoke a provider’s degree awarding powers as part of a regulatory intervention. See our full variation guidance for more details.
