Higher education market monitoring tool

The higher education market monitoring tool shows insights into supply and demand for higher educational subjects across England at a regional level, with insights into research data across the UK.

Explore the data

This prototype tool brings together information on where students are applying, studying, graduating, and going onto employment by geography, provider, and subject, alongside information on the research infrastructure.

This tool has been developed to support local and regional decision makers, as well as to help strategic planning in universities and colleges.

Troubleshooting

Cookies may need to be enabled on the Office for Students website in order to see the tool. These can be enabled using the "C" icon in the lower left corner. If this does not work, we recommend closing and restarting your web browser, or switch to a different browser.

The tool may also fail to load when the server is experiencing high web traffic. When this happens, please close the webpage and try again later.

The tool contains multiple datasets with multiple filters, and it will take a moment to reload the tool when changing filters or between different tabs. This loading time can vary based on the internet speed and the processing power of the device used.

You can open multiple tabs in your web browser or multiple windows if you wish to compare elements of the tool without having the re-select filters.

When you select a combination of filter options, charts may show no data, a suppression coding such as [none] or [low], or a "data unavailable" message. This may mean that there is no data available for your combination of filters, or that the data has been suppressed for data protection reasons.

The tool has been created using PowerBI software, and designed for users using a web browser on a desktop computer or laptop. The tool may work on touch screen devices, but the functionality may be more limited.

No, the tool can only be used with an active internet connection.

Whilst many of the datasets are publicly available, including UCAS data, the full underlying datasets have not been made available in the initial prototype of the tool. We expect to make the underlying data available in future iterations of the tool.

Developing the market monitoring tool

This tool has been published as a prototype to allow us to gather feedback and develop the tool iteratively alongside local and regional decision makers and the higher education sector. We are actively seeking feedback to determine the tool's value and understand what improvements and changes would help in developing this further.

We expect to update the tool iteratively following feedback collection. We expect to publish the next update in the first half of 2027.
