Key performance measure 1
The number and timeliness of TEF assessments
This KPM tracks the number of Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessments completed each year against the number planned, and whether they were completed within the defined timeframe appropriate to each assessment’s context.
We are currently reviewing the responses to our consultation on the future approach to quality regulation. We expect to publish the first data for this KPM once the consultation outcomes have been published and any changes to our regulation of the quality of higher education have been implemented.
‘We will be relentlessly focused on securing positive higher education experiences for all students. We will help drive improvement across the sector, recognising that while much provision is already excellent, there is room to improve further.’ (The OfS strategy 2025 to 2030)
We are currently consulting on a new approach to quality regulation. Under the proposed model, the OfS would assess the quality of provision at a set number of institutions each year on a rolling basis. This KPM will show how many assessments are completed annually relative to the number planned, where ‘completed’ means that the assessment outcome has been published.
It will also report the proportion of assessments completed within the defined timeframe. This timeframe will be extended where an institution makes representations about its outcome.
Completing the planned number of TEF assessments in a timely manner will support our aim of driving quality improvement for all students, by ensuring every provider is evaluated within the rolling cycle.
