Size and shape of provision by provider - example dashboard

This dashboard uses fictional data to illustrate the data that we proposed to report about the size and shape of a provider's provision. It also includes overall sector level data calculated and presented in the same way.

For help using this dashboard, please see our user guide below or use the yellow 'help guide' button in the top right hand corner of the dashboard.

How to use this dashboard

Use the buttons across the top left to choose between three tabs:

  • Student numbers tab: This shows a summary of student numbers at a particular provider.
  • Shape and size of provision tab: This shows a breakdown of student numbers at a particular provider by student and course characteristics. It includes options to show the data in tabular form and as bar charts.
  • Partnership arrangements tab: This shows a breakdown of student numbers at a particular provider by type of partnership. It includes options to show the data in tabular form and as bar charts.

Across all tabs, it summarises information between 2016-17 and 2019-20, as well as the four year aggregate, broken down by type of provision and level of study. The four year aggregate is a sum across the years 2016-17 to 2019-20.

Further information

We have provided this dashboard as an example of the data we are proposing to calculate and publish for each provider, for use in our regulation of student outcomes and in Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessments.

It contains information about the size and shape of provision offered by each provider.

We have proposed that this information will equip assessors and TEF panellists with an understanding of the provider’s context in terms of:

  • the provider's size
  • the types of courses it offers
  • the mix of subjects it offers
  • the characteristics of its students.

Our consultation also proposes that the indicators included in this dashboard will also be published in a tabular format. We have provided examples of the data workbooks that illustrate this format in the ‘Get the data’ section below.

Further information about the data presented in this dashboard is available in our consultation documents. You can also read our frequently asked questions.

When viewing the illustrative data in tabular format, there are two Excel workbooks to consider:

  1. Overall sector level data
  2. Fictional provider data

You can also download the data for this dashboard as CSV files (zipped).
