OfS responds to national review of higher education student suicide deaths

A report published by the Department for Education has set out a series of recommendations to support students and prevent suicide.

John Blake, Director for Fair Access and Participation at the Office for Students (OfS) said:

'This is a sobering and important report that draws on a range of data and evidence, as well as the testimony of bereaved families. Any death by suicide is an unimaginable tragedy, and it is right that this report sets out a range of wide-reaching recommendations. We will carefully consider any recommendations which relate to our work.

'The OfS is an active member of the higher education mental health implementation taskforce and we will continue to work with organisations across the sector and beyond on this fundamentally important issue. Many universities and colleges are doing good work to support students' mental health and to prevent suicide. The OfS's work in this area includes funding projects and sharing effective practice. We will continue to play our full role in a collective effort to reduce suicides and ensure students have good access to mental health support.'
