Artificial intelligence in higher education

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasing part of the higher education experience for students, and it’s important that the Office for Students, institutions, and the sector keep pace with this rapidly evolving technology.

Tell us how your institution is responding to AI

We are collaborating with Advance HE on a research project to find out how universities and colleges are responding to the opportunities and risks AI is bringing to higher education.

As part of this research, we are asking senior leaders of institutions, academic staff, students, and their representatives to tell us about their views and experiences via a series of roundtables, interviews, and an online survey.

Join one of our roundtables

We are asking senior leaders of institutions, academic staff, students, and their representatives to tell us about their views and experiences of AI at a series of in-person roundtables in June 2026, which will be held in London, Manchester and Bristol.

These discussions will help us to understand how academic staff and students are using AI, the impact of AI on their work and the barriers to effective adoption, as well as what students expect from their institution.

If you can’t attend any of our in-person events, we will also be holding online roundtables for staff and students to share their views.

Respond to our online survey

To ensure we capture a diverse range of voices from across the higher education sector, we are running an online survey open to senior leaders, staff, students, and others with an interest in the impact of AI on higher education.

The survey will close on Friday 10 July 2026.

How we will use the findings

We will analyse the findings in collaboration with Advance HE, drawing upon its research expertise and track record in supporting higher education leaders to enhance teaching and learning for students.

We plan to publish the findings later this year, to help institutions consider how they could:

  • use AI tools to improve students’ experiences of higher education
  • develop policies to mitigate risks
  • strengthen their AI capabilities to drive innovation in teaching and learning.
