The designated data body

In-year data collection programme

The designated data body (Jisc, operating as HESA) is working with us and other statutory customers to create the in-year data collection programme.

‘In‑year’ student data collection refers to the collection of student information at multiple points during the academic year, rather than solely through a single retrospective annual return.

Further education colleges already return Individualised Learner Record (ILR) data multiple times a year. For all other OfS-registered providers, we have asked the DDB to deliver a change programme that phases the introduction of in-year student data collection. This will be introduced across the UK, working with Jisc, the Scottish Funding Council, Medr, and the Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland.

In-year data collection will give providers and regulators more timely, robust and actionable data, enabling earlier insight into emerging issues and trends while students are still studying.

The aim of the programme is to ensure the sector has the right data, at the right time and in the right way, supporting effective provider governance, improved student outcomes, and proportionate, timely regulation.

Jisc is responsible for delivering the programme, within the scope and parameters set by the OfS and other statutory customers.
