Sector distribution of student outcomes and experience measures data dashboard

About the dashboard

This dashboard shows the distribution of student outcome and experience measures calculated for each provider across the sector.

The dashboard indicates the spread of indicator and benchmark values across OfS-registered English providers. It allows users to understand the distribution of values observed for different modes and levels of study, separately for each measure.

It also summarises the numbers of students and indicators that fall above and below our numerical thresholds for student outcomes.

In focusing on sector distributions, the dashboard does not show information about the strength of statistical evidence for each indicator and benchmark value, which informs any judgements that the OfS makes about a provider’s performance. Our provider-level student outcomes and TEF data dashboards illustrate the strength of statistical evidence for each value shown in this dashboard.

The dashboard is populated with the following student outcomes and experience measures:

  1. Continuation: The proportion of students that were observed to be continuing in the study of a higher education qualification (or have gained a qualification) one year and 15 days after they started their course (two years and 15 days for part-time students)
  2. Completion: The proportion of students that were observed to have gained a higher education qualification (or were continuing in the study of a qualification) four years and 15 days after they started their course (six years and 15 days for part-time students).
  3. Progression: The proportion of qualifiers that identify managerial or professional employment, further study or other positive outcomes among the activities that they were undertaking when responding to the Graduate Outcomes survey 15 months after they left higher education.
  4. Student experience measures: The level of agreement indicated among final year students to the range of statements that comprise an area, or scale, of the National Student Survey asking about different aspects of their higher education experience.

The student outcomes and experience measures provide one part of the evidence used in our regulatory processes: any judgements that the OfS makes about a provider’s performance will also take into account provider context.

About the data

The sector distribution of student outcomes and experience measures dashboard and associated data files are based on a common set of student outcome and experience data indicators constructed and published by us for use in our regulation.

These are produced in the same way for each provider we regulate, using available national datasets and consistent definitions and approaches to data. The data definitions and approaches used follow from our recent consultation on the construction of student outcome and experience data indicators for use in our regulation.

Common queries about the data presented in this dashboard can be found in our frequently asked questions.

Details of the data sources, definitions and methods that the OfS uses to construct student outcome and experience indicators can be found in documents describing our measures and definitions.

Where data has been suppressed for data protection reasons, either because there are two or fewer students in the numerator, or where the numerator is within two of the denominator, these indicator values are displayed as 0 and 100 respectively within this dashboard.
