What is the pilot?
TEF provides information about teaching at higher education providers to help prospective students choose where to study.
TEF ratings are currently given at provider level only, but making this information also available at subject level will be even more useful to applicants.
We’re currently carrying out subject pilots on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) to find the most effective way of producing TEF ratings at subject, as well as college or university level.
- 2017-18: this pilot tested how two models produce TEF subject ratings. The results, and the DfE consultation will inform the second year of subject pilots.
- 2018-19: this pilot will be based on the outcome of the 2017-18 pilot, responses to the DfE consultation and findings from DfE’s student research.
As these pilots are testing methods, none of the ratings they produce will be published.
From 2019-20, TEF will be assessed and ratings will be published at subject and provider level.
