At the University of Bradford, we believe education should be inclusive, relevant, and accessible to everyone. Our MSc in Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics was created to equip students - particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds - with the skills they need to thrive in the fast-growing technology industry. A key aspect of this programme is that it is delivered within our Business School, making AI and data analytics accessible to students with no prior technical experience. By blending technical training with real-world business applications, we ensure that students graduate with a well-rounded skill set that is in high demand.

Course design

The fields of AI and data analytics are evolving rapidly, and our course evolves alongside them. From the start, we designed this programme with input from industry leaders, alumni, and major technology companies to ensure it meets the needs of employers and provides students with the most relevant skills. This strong industry collaboration has helped us create a dynamic curriculum that combines foundational AI concepts with hands-on learning and business applications.

One of the defining features of this course is its accessibility to students from non-technical backgrounds. While traditional AI and data analytics programmes often cater to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates, we wanted to break down barriers and open opportunities for students from business, social sciences, and other fields. Our approach ensures that those without a background in coding or advanced mathematics can still gain the skills needed to succeed in AI-driven industries.

To support this diverse student base, we provide foundational modules covering programming, data handling, and AI basics before diving into more complex topics. Students develop practical experience through real-world datasets, industry projects, and hands-on labs using tools such as Python, machine learning frameworks, and cloud computing platforms. Interactive learning methods — including live coding sessions, group projects, and guest lectures from industry professionals — help students bridge the gap between theory and application.

As the programme has grown, we've continued to refine and expand the curriculum based on student feedback. Initially designed as a broad introduction to AI, we noticed an increasing number of STEM students enrolling over the years, due to them valuing the applied focus. In response, we added more technical modules and opened up shared courses with other faculties like Engineering and Informatics. This adaptability ensures that all students, regardless of their background, receive a learning experience tailored to their needs and career aspirations.

Student experience and impact

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and have different motivations for joining the course. Some are looking to switch careers, others want to enhance their existing expertise, and many are drawn to the potential of AI to drive change in business and society. Regardless of their starting point, they all leave with a valuable skill set and increased confidence in their abilities.

Here’s what some of our students have to say about their experience:

‘This course has been life-changing, equipping me with practical AI skills to tackle real-world challenges as a disabled woman. Its focus on real, applicable knowledge gave me the confidence to transition from marketing to a technical career. Seeing the university continuously adapt the programme to support students from all backgrounds has been truly inspiring.’ – Melanie Denyer
‘The MSc Applied AI and Data Analytics programme at Bradford University has been a pivotal experience in my career. It provided me with deep insights, especially in Natural Language Processing, which have been instrumental in my role as a Data Scientist at the University of Cambridge. Additionally, I co-founded the Applied AI Society to help fellow students on the course and build a collaborative community for capacity building in the field.’ – Sebastian Obeta
‘Studying Applied AI and Data Analytics at the University of Bradford has been an exciting journey into a rapidly evolving field that feels like we're on the brink of a new industrial revolution. The course offers the perfect balance of technical skills and business understanding, preparing me for a future where AI is transforming industries and creating entirely new career paths. I'm thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking space, where each new breakthrough seems to open up even more possibilities.’ – Abdus-Samad Bin-Sarfraz

Beyond the classroom, led by students and driven by collaboration, the Applied Artificial Intelligence Society empowers students to support and learn from one another. This student-led initiative creates a dynamic space where peers come together to explore data science, tackle real-world challenges, and share insights. By organising workshops, hackathons, and guest speaker events, students take the lead in fostering innovation and skill development. Through this supportive community, they enhance their technical abilities, expand their professional networks, and prepare for both industry and academic opportunities — all while learning from and with their fellow students.

Additionally, we offer a three-month placement supported by our industry partners, providing hands-on experience that has been highly impactful. This takes place after the students have submitted their dissertation.

The future

So, what's next? AI and data analytics are playing an increasingly central role in industries worldwide, and we want our graduates to lead the way. We are constantly exploring new ways to refine and enhance the course. Our next steps include incorporating more interdisciplinary learning, expanding ethical AI discussions, and strengthening our partnerships with technology companies to offer even more hands-on industry projects.

We also recognise the importance of lifelong learning. AI is a field that never stands still, so we aim to provide students with not only the skills they need today but also the mindset to continue learning and adapting as technology evolves. By staying connected with alumni, industry experts, and emerging trends, we ensure that our course remains at the cutting edge of AI education.

At the University of Bradford, we are proud of what we've built — and we're excited for the future. As AI continues to transform industries and create new opportunities, our students will be well-prepared to take on these challenges and drive innovation in their fields. Whether they come from a technical background or are new to the world of AI, they leave with the confidence and expertise to make a real impact.
