TEF by provider - example dashboard

This dashboard uses fictional data to illustrate the indicators and split indicators we proposed to report and publish for each provider in relation to Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessments. It also includes overall sector level data calculated and presented in the same way.

For help using this dashboard, please see our user guide below or use the yellow 'help guide' button in the top right hand corner of the dashboard.

How to use this dashboard

Use the buttons at the top left to choose between two tabs:

  • All measures tab: This shows multiple measures for a single type of split (a single student or study characteristic). This tab allows users to look at provider performance of a particular split across measures. This data is separated into two distinct sections:
    • All measures (all undergraduate): Showing multiple measures for a single type of split for all undergraduates.
    • Individual measures by level of study: Showing each measure separately for a single type of split and separately by level of study. This allows users to determine the variation of performance for a single measure at a more granular level of study
  • Single measures tab: This shows a single measure for multiple types of split (multiple characteristics). This tab allows users to look at provider performance across splits for a single measure.

Throughout the rest of the guide, we have suggested an order to using the buttons and filters, but they can be applied in any order.

1. Ensure the 'All measures' tab is highlighted

2. Select a provider

Use the ‘Select a provider’ dropdown box on the left to choose (or search for) a provider’s data to display.

The sector rates can be selected by selecting the provider ‘*All OfS registered providers’.

Providers without any data whatsoever will not show up in the ‘Select a provider’ dropdown.

3. Select a mode of study

4. Select a split indicator

Use the ‘Select a split type’ buttons to select a specific split indicator.

These split indicators relate to subject studied, student characteristics, year of entry or qualification (as appropriate to the student outcome in question), specific course types and provider partnership arrangements.

5. Choose whether to show indicators, difference from benchmark, or both

Use the buttons to choose whether to:

  • Show indicators only: This shows absolute performance relative to a numerical threshold.

  • Show difference from benchmark only: This shows the relative performance and compares the absolute performance to a benchmark.

  • Show indicators and difference from benchmark: This shows both comparisons of performance. This is shown by default.

Benchmarked data is not applicable to sector-level data. The charts will still appear but will contain no data.

6. Select which type of measure to show

This is only applicable to the ‘Individual measures by level of study’ section. Use the yellow tabs to select a measure type:

  • Student outcomes: This includes continuation, cohort tracking completion, compound completion indicator and progression measures.

  • Student experience (proposed): This includes the National Student Survey (NSS) scales teaching on my course, assessment and feedback, academic support, learning resources and student voice.

  • Student experience (other): This includes the NSS scales learning opportunities, organisation and management, and learning community.

1. Ensure the 'Single measure' tab is highlighted

4. Select a measure

Use the ‘Select a measure’ dropdown to display provider performance for the student outcome and experience measure selected.

5. Select a level of study

Use the ‘Select a level of study’ dropdown to select which level of study to display.

Further information

We have provided this dashboard as an example of the data we are proposing to calculate and publish for each provider, for use in Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessments.

It contains information on each student outcome and experience measure we propose to calculate for this purpose, and the range of indicators and split indicators we have proposed to report.

Our consultation also proposes that the information included in this dashboard will also be published in a tabular format. We have provided examples of the data workbooks that illustrate this format in the ‘Get the data’ section below.

Further information about the data presented in this dashboard is available in our consultation documents. You can also read our frequently asked questions.

When viewing the illustrative data in tabular format, there are two Excel workbooks to consider:

  1. Overall sector level data
  2. Taught or registered population at a fictional provider

You can also download the data for this dashboard as CSV files (zipped).
