The OfS publishes data on the numbers of students joining medical and dental higher education courses across the UK. Below are the figures for the academic year 2017-18.
The data is collected through an annual survey which we run on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care, Health Education England, the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department for the Economy (Northern Ireland).

Total intake of medical and dental students at UK medical and dental schools during the academic year 2017-18:
Note: We have corrected an error in the ‘Medical intake by sex’ and ‘Dental intake by sex’ worksheets of the Medical and dental intake workbook above. The data for males was listed under the heading ‘Female’ and data for females was listed under the heading ‘Male’. This was updated on 27/02/2019.

The data is used for funding and workforce planning purposes. For universities and colleges in England, the OfS reviews the data against medical and dental intake targets to inform funding allocations.
