The TEF assesses excellence in teaching at universities and colleges, and how well they ensure excellent outcomes for their students in terms of graduate-level employment or further study. The current TEF assesses ‘provider-level’ undergraduate provision.
Subject pilot 2018-19
The OfS is currently carrying out subject pilots on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) to find the most effective way of producing TEF ratings at subject level, as well as college or university level. Following the completion of the pilot programme, TEF ratings at both provider and subject level will be announced in spring 2021.
The first year of subject-level TEF took place in 2017-18. Building on this, the 2018-19 pilot tests a single model. We will trial potential refinements to metrics and processes that were not explored in the 2017-18 pilot, including the production of ‘statements of findings’ at subject level.
