These pages refer to the first year of the TEF subject-level pilot (2017-18).
For the second year of pilot activity, please see TEF subject-level pilot 2018-19.
What are the subject pilots?
TEF provides information about teaching at higher education providers to help prospective students choose where to study.
TEF ratings are currently given at provider level only, but making this information also available at subject level will be even more useful to applicants.
Subject pilots being carried out on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) are designed to find the most effective way of producing TEF ratings at subject, as well as college or university level.
- TEF subject pilot 2017-18: This pilot tested how two models produce TEF subject ratings.
- TEF subject pilot 2018-19: This pilot is based on the findings of the 2017-18 pilot, responses to the DfE consultation and findings from the DfE’s student research. The specification will be published after the Government response to the consultation has been released.
These pilots are testing methods - the ratings produced will not be published.
