Counter-terrorism - the Prevent duty

How we monitor

Our monitoring framework explains how we monitor providers’ implementation of the Prevent duty.

It includes:

  • information on how providers demonstrate due regard to the OfS and how we assess compliance
  • details of how providers should report changes of circumstance or Prevent-related serious incidents
  • how we will promote continuous improvement from the sector.

Prevent review meetings

We held a series of surgeries offering information on the monitoring approach for providers. The same content was covered in the webinar below.

Monitoring outcomes

During the 2020-21 academic year:

  • 301 established providers subject to Prevent monitoring were required to submit an accountability statement signed off by the chair of the governing body or proprietor and submit data about their activities relating to core areas of the Prevent duty (compared with 300 during 2019-20).
  • 19 providers were newly subject to the Prevent duty (compared with 22 during 2019-20). New entrants undergo an initial test of their compliance through both detailed assessments and Prevent review meetings. New entrant providers are not required to submit accountability and data returns until they complete this process.

Through these monitoring processes, we did not find any cases of providers failing to demonstrate due regard to the Prevent duty.
